How Tankless Water Heaters Work
- When you open up the hot water spigot, cold water starts to flow
through the tankless water heater unit. A water flow sensor detects
the flow of water through the pipe.
- After detecting flow, a computer kicks on and starts the unit. If it's a gas tankless water heater, the gas is sent to the burners for ignition.
- Burners then ignite and begin heating the water, heating the cold water in the heat exchanger.
- Hot water is then available, being heated on demand.
- After water is turned off, the tankless hot water heater goes into a "standy mode" waiting for the next flow of water to be detected.
