How Tankless Water Heaters Work

  1. When you open up the hot water spigot, cold water starts to flow through the tankless water heater unit. A water flow sensor detects the flow of water through the pipe.
  2. After detecting flow, a computer kicks on and starts the unit. If it's a gas tankless water heater, the gas is sent to the burners for ignition.
  3. Burners then ignite and begin heating the water, heating the cold water in the heat exchanger.
  4. Hot water is then available, being heated on demand.
  5. After water is turned off, the tankless hot water heater goes into a "standy mode" waiting for the next flow of water to be detected.
